ENGLISH VERSION

Howie Severino and his documentary team met actress Jo Berry long before she became a TV star. She was just 12 years old, and the daughter of the team’s then documentary subject Perry Berry himself, a compelling figure as the charismatic leader of the little people community (or those who shared the dwarfism condition they were born with).

Even then, as the self-confident class president in grade five, Jo did not allow her lack of physical stature to hinder her pursuit of her goals.

As a child, she already had the mark of future success but no one could have predicted what she has become, a prime-time drama actress who never even passed through the stage of supporting roles.

It reflects changes in a TV audience (and by extension perhaps society as a whole) that unexpectedly welcomed such an unusual star. But it also required enormous risk-taking on the part of producers and directors when she got her first role without any acting experience.

Most of all, her triumphs are the product of her remarkable hybrid family of six, equally divided between little people and average-sized members. Jo was raised by parents who taught her to just smile when taunted.

For Jo Berry and her dad Perry, her sudden success was the stuff of fairy tales, until the pandemic happened.

Howie and his documentary team tell the bittersweet story of the Berry family that began 16 years ago and became the story of our time. ###
